“THE BUTTES”
Approx. 835 Acres
Sierra County California
This is a first time offering of the Harris family property located off of Hwy 49 near Sierra City California, approx. 75 miles from Reno, NV, approx. 200 miles from the Bay area and approx. 110 miles from Sacramento CA. The Sierra Buttes are a California landmark, similar in spectacular beauty to Yosemite, Ca, the Grand Tetons of Wyoming and Telluride Colorado.
This unique and spectacular property has been in the Harris family for more than 65 years. Junius Harris, a consulting Surgeon for Southern Pacific Railroad back in the 1940’s, purchased this land from the Railroad. The land was granted to the Railroad in the 1800’s but the Government chose Donner Pass rather than Yuba Pass to build the Railroad.
The family roots in the area go farther back than the purchase of this property, the current Harris family owners great, great uncle, Wallace Lusk, ran the Wells Fargo Stage Coach stop, operating between Truckee and Marysville in the late 1800’s, at Bassett’s on Hwy 49. Bassett’s still operates today as a restaurant.
The property consists of spectacular mountain rock formations with some of the best views imaginable. Two alpine lakes, Young America Lake and Volcano Lake, are completely on this deeded ground as well as frontage on upper and lower Sardine Lakes. This is in an area where most of the surrounding land is owned by the US Forest Service.
The access is limited in winter due to the snow conditions, the elevation and ruggedness of the country. Access to the property other times of the year is good via primarily Forest Service roads. There has never been an effort by the Harris family to develop the property; it remains as pristine today as it was when the family acquired it in the 40’s.
To own the Harris family property would be to own a California landmark, like owning a State Park! It’s simply a one-of-a-kind property. There are many spectacular building sites, on top of the Buttes, Volcano Lake frontage, the lagoon on upper Sardine Lake etc. It is rare to have the opportunity to purchase property like this in the Sierra’s or anywhere in the Country with private alpine lakes!
This land is not conducive to major development. The highest and best use is probably a private family retreat, a camp or various summer and winter recreational usages or something we haven’t even thought of! There has been a lot of interest by various conservation groups in preserving this unique land through conservation easements and other programs. These programs could help an owner financially, not affect the private usage, and help preserve a truly spectacular property.
“The Buttes” Harris family property is offered for sale for the first time at $6,262,500
